About Us

St Ignatius' is a parish of the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne in Richmond, Victoria, Australia and is entrusted to the care of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). We are a welcoming and supportive multicultural community.

Situated on Richmond Hill in Church Street, the church is just five minutes from the Melbourne Central Business District (CBD) and is one of the earliest and most beautiful churches in the country. From the CBD you can reach us on two tram routes, 48 and 75 on Bridge Road and route 70 on Swan Street. Alternatively, tram routes 78 and 79 from St Kilda beach to North Richmond will stop right in front of the Church (Tram Stop 59) on the top of Richmond Hill. (See Melway's map 44 F10.) There is ample off-street parking on the church's grounds on the weekend.

The people of Richmond are a supportive, friendly and multicultural community and parish community members come from across Melbourne and many parts of the world. We come together to worship God and care for each other. As part of this care, there are many dedicated individuals, groups, committees, clubs, etc, supporting the life of this parish.

Parish History
Richmond is one of the oldest parishes in Melbourne. It began in 1853 and the parish at that time stretched out to Nunawading, although most of the population was clustered around the villages of Hawthorn and Richmond.
