Polish Chaplaincy Richmond Print

In the early 1950s, Father Josef Janus SJ set up a chaplaincy for Polish migrants to Australia. This was centred at St Ignatius' Church in Richmond. Initially Fr. Janus lived in the Jesuit community in Richmond. A few years later the Polish priests set up a residence in Clifton Street, Richmond.

The Polish Jesuit Chaplaincy still operates from Clifton Street, Richmond. At present there are three Jesuits involved - Father Wieslaw Slowik, Father Ludwick Reba and Father Tadeusz Rostworowski.

They serve the Polish community at St Ignatius', Richmond, Sacred Heart, Oakleigh and the Polish Marian Shrine in Essendon.

There is a Polish language Mass every Sunday at St Ignatius' Church at 12:00pm noon and a Saturday night vigil Mass at 7:00pm. The Polish community arranges special Masses at other times too.

The current president of the Polish Committee at St Ignatius' is Mrs Margaret Mertuszka. Mr Eugeniusz Mialszygrosz is in charge of the St Ignatius Polish Club.
