03 April 2011: Fourth Sunday of Lent

From Ashes to Easter is the title of a concert to be held at St Ignatius' Church next Thursday evening, 07 April 2011  at 7:30pm.

Peter Kearney is a well-known singer/songwriter.  In the 1960s, with the encouragement of Father Ted Kennedy of Redfern, Sydney, Peter started writing hymns, many of which we have sung in church over the years.

I hope that many of our parishioners will come to this concert as we journey towards Easter.

The gospel of the 4th Sunday of Lent is the story of the healing of the man born blind in John's gospel.  The story can be seen as the journey towards faith of one man.  In his cure he comes from blindness - a condition which led to his being judged a sinner (a judgement Jesus immediately rejects) - to sight.    At a deeper level, the journey of the man born blind is a journey from darkness into light through the grace of Jesus who proclaims himself as 'the Light of the world'.

The journey of Lent takes us from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday and beyond.  It is a journey from darkness and despair to the light and the hope of Easter.
