Changes in the Order of Mass PDF Print E-mail

07 August 2011: Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Mass at St Ignatius' ChurchMost of us have heard about the new responses of the Mass.  Many churches in Melbourne have already introduced the new responses and congregations are beginning to get used to them.  From the beginning of Advent this year we will be using new prayers for the rest of the Mass.

The parish staff considers that it is opportune for our congregations to begin getting used to the new responses.  For this reason we have printed the responses in our bulletin, and we will continue to print them for some time in the future.  In many instances the changes are small, but for this reason perhaps trickier.

Some have asked why our church is going through so much trouble and expense.  When English came into the liturgy back in the 1970s, it was always intended that there was need for a revision in the future.  The process of translation from the original Latin was a lengthy enterprise.  Some are not at all happy at the final process.

Finally, we are using the new translation because this is what all English speaking Masses will be using.  We are not asking anyone to like the changes, but I am sure that we will get used to them.  Essentially the Mass is still the Mass - a prayer of thanksgiving for all of us.
