More than 50 years ago, Jesuit Father Pedro Arrupe was a witness to mass devastation in Japan following the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. He described his reaction on seeing the destruction wrought by the bomb:

'We continued looking for some way of entering the city, but it was impossible. We did the only thing that could be done in the presence of such mass slaughter. We fell on our knees and prayed for guidance, as we were destitute of all human help.'

In the face of the devastation in Japan, let us also pray to God for guidance. In silence and stillness, may we feel that deep respect for the suffering people of Japan that goes beyond words.

God is silent and weeping, absent and there among the wreckage, and all of these and none of these. We want to hold the hurt and bind the wounds and cherish the living and the dead as God does.
