- Reunification of the Parishes: Saint Ignatius and Saint James
St Ignatius' Church and St James' Church have been in partnership since August 1998 and I would like to propose that our parish community consider the option of proceeding to reunification.
St James' was originally part of St Ignatius' Parish boundaries under the care of the Jesuits and in 1931 the Jesuits handed over the parish to the care of the diocesan clergy. More than six years ago, the two parishes came into partnership, with one Parish Priest for the two parishes and with our two parish primary schools operating independently of one another. The two churches operate with one Parish Leadership Team but with separate financial accounts.
On Sunday 27 August 2000, St James' Church celebrated its centenary and it has become clear to me since being appointed Parish Priest, that its local community has many strengths and a distinctive identity that should be preserved. It is a very supportive community and has a natural network for liturgical celebration and pastoral support.
Reunification of our parishes is not necessary, but could provide several positive opportunities for both St James' and St Ignatius'.
